Industry Standards

Standard Brick: 230×115×75 mm (9×4.5×3 in)

Bricks per m³: 500-550 with mortar

Mortar per m³: 0.25-0.3 m³ for brickwork

Mortar Ratio: 1:4 cement:sand for walls

Brick Wastage: 3-8% for cutting & breakage

Dry Volume: Wet mortar × 1.33 (33% extra for shrinkage)

Brickwork Standards & Guidelines

Calculation Formulas

Number of Bricks:

Volume ÷ (Brick Volume + Mortar Volume)

Brick Volume:

Length × Width × Height

Mortar Volume:

Total Volume - (Bricks × Brick Volume)

Dry Mortar Volume:

Wet Mortar Volume × 1.33 (for shrinkage)

Cement Required:

(Dry Mortar Volume × Cement Ratio × 1440) ÷ 50

Sand Required:

Dry Mortar Volume × Sand Ratio

Standard Brick Sizes

Standard Brick:

• 230×115×75 mm (9×4.5×3 in)

• Weight: 3-3.5 kg

Modular Brick:

• 190×90×90 mm (7.5×3.5×3.5 in)

• Weight: 2.5-3 kg

Engineering Brick:

• 200×100×100 mm (8×4×4 in)

• Weight: 3.5-4 kg

Jumbo Brick:

• 250×125×100 mm (10×5×4 in)

• Weight: 4-4.5 kg

Mortar Specifications

1:3 Ratio:

• Rich mortar for high strength

• 1 bag cement : 3 ft³ sand

1:4 Ratio:

• Standard for brickwork

• 1 bag cement : 4 ft³ sand

1:5 Ratio:

• Lean mortar for foundations

• 1 bag cement : 5 ft³ sand

Dry Volume Note:

• Dry mortar = Wet mortar × 1.33

• Accounts for 25% shrinkage

• Always use dry volume for material calculations

Example Calculations

Wall Calculation Example

Scenario: 20×10 ft wall, 9 inch thick

Wall volume: 20 × 10 × (9/12) = 150 ft³

Brick volume: (9×4.5×3)/1728 = 0.0703 ft³

Bricks needed: 150 ÷ 0.0703 = 2134 bricks

Wet mortar: 150 × 0.25 = 37.5 ft³

Dry mortar: 37.5 × 1.33 = 49.9 ft³

Cement (1:4): (49.9/5) ÷ 1.25 = 7.98 bags

Sand (1:4): (49.9/5) × 4 = 39.9 ft³

Foundation Calculation

Scenario: 30×1.5×2 ft foundation

Volume: 30 × 1.5 × 2 = 90 ft³

Bricks per ft³: 13.5 (with mortar)

Bricks needed: 90 × 13.5 = 1215 bricks

Wet mortar: 90 × 0.3 = 27 ft³

Dry mortar: 27 × 1.33 = 35.9 ft³

Cement (1:5): (35.9/6) ÷ 1.25 = 4.78 bags

Sand (1:5): (35.9/6) × 5 = 29.9 ft³

Column Calculation

Scenario: 12×12×10 in column (4 columns)

Volume per column: 1×1×10 = 10 ft³

Total volume: 10 × 4 = 40 ft³

Bricks needed: 40 × 13.5 = 540 bricks

Wet mortar: 40 × 0.28 = 11.2 ft³

Dry mortar: 11.2 × 1.33 = 14.9 ft³

Cement (1:4): (14.9/5) ÷ 1.25 = 2.38 bags

Sand (1:4): (14.9/5) × 4 = 11.9 ft³
